CAR OWNERSHIP GUIDES
Car list price, discounts and on-road price in Vietnam: what is the difference?
Understand Vietnam car prices, registration-tax support and dealer offers. Follow a VND 800 million example to work out your actual buying budget.

You see a car advertised at VND 800 million, a dealer offers it for VND 760 million, and the amount needed to take it home is higher again. All three figures can be correct: the list price is the published starting point, the discounted price is what you pay for the car after eligible reductions, and the on-road price adds registration and other costs needed to put it into use. To see whether it fits your budget, look at the final total and what it includes.
The question I would start with is: “For this exact version, registered where I live, how much money do I need altogether?” This guide focuses on new cars and reading quotations; the detailed registration guide is linked at the end.
1. List price: a starting point, not the drive-away total
The list price is the published price for a model or version. Compare the same trim, paint colour, production year and equipment. An advertised “from” price generally points to the lowest starting figure in a range; it does not tell you that your chosen car costs that amount.
Read the note about taxes and fees too. For example, Toyota’s May 2026 price list says retail prices include VAT but exclude registration and inspection charges. That document illustrates how to read a price list; its May prices are not being presented as today’s purchase quotation.

2. Promotional price: a cash saving or an extra benefit?
An offer might reduce the car price, contribute towards a fee, include accessories or insurance, or offer financing benefits. These help in different ways. I would separate the amount that reduces the bill from the extras before comparing two dealers.
- Cash reduction: ask for the amount deducted and the resulting car price, with its VAT status.
- Gifts: identify the product, model or service package, its conditions and whether a cash alternative is available.
- Conditional offers: establish eligible cars, payment/invoice deadlines, any loan or trade-in requirement, and whether offers can be combined.
A dated example makes this clearer: Toyota’s programme for 1–31 October 2026 covers its listed eligible models and requires full 100% payment and a dealer VAT invoice within the programme period. Paying a deposit during the month alone therefore does not satisfy those conditions.

In a hypothetical comparison, dealer A takes VND 40 million off the car. Dealer B takes off VND 20 million and includes accessories advertised as worth VND 30 million. B advertises VND 50 million in benefits, but you still pay VND 20 million more for the car than at A. Whether those accessories justify the difference depends on what you need, their quality and the installation terms.
3. A registration-tax contribution is different from a legal exemption
Manufacturer or dealer support is part of a sales offer; a statutory exemption or reduction is a separate policy with its own eligibility rules. If an offer says “100% registration-tax support”, ask for the actual amount, any cap and how it is delivered: a price deduction, later reimbursement or payment on your behalf. The written arrangement determines the cash you need to have ready.
Suppose a programme contributes up to VND 80 million while your registration-tax notice is VND 96 million. Unless the contract provides more support, the VND 16 million difference remains in your budget. This is an example of how a cap works, not a condition attributed to the Toyota programme above. If the discounted price already includes that contribution, count it only once.
4. What normally goes into the on-road price?
A useful breakdown is: the actual car purchase price + registration tax + registration/plates + applicable inspection, road-use and compulsory insurance charges. Show paperwork services, optional own-damage insurance and chosen accessories separately. Two quotations labelled “on-road” still need the same inclusions before their totals are comparable.

- Registration tax: ask for the assessed value, percentage and amount.
- Registration and plates: identify the charge for your registration location and case; keep any agent’s paperwork fee separate.
- Inspection: separate inspection or first-inspection-exemption services, certificate fees and relevant taxes. A first-inspection exemption does not mean every administrative charge is zero.
- Road-use charges and compulsory third-party liability insurance: specify the period included, so a longer period is not compared with a shorter one.

Own-damage cover is different from compulsory third-party liability insurance. You may choose it to cover your car under the policy terms; a lender may also require it under the loan agreement. Either way, give it a clear line in the quotation. A dealer’s paperwork service charge should also be identified separately, rather than grouped under “government fees”.

5. Why might registration tax stay the same when the car gets cheaper?
The purchase price and the registration-tax value are different inputs. Decree 175/2025 assigns provincial authorities the vehicle valuation tables, with a separate process for new types not yet listed. A dealer discount therefore does not automatically produce a matching reduction in registration tax.

Ask whoever prepares the quotation to identify the registration-tax basis for the exact vehicle type. A preliminary estimate is still useful when shortlisting cars; before payment, reconcile it with the amount officially assessed for your application.
6. Example: a VND 800 million list price—what should you budget?
Assume a new petrol passenger car bought outright. All figures below are in millions of Vietnamese dong. This is a worked example, not a quotation for a particular model or locality. Assume an assessed registration-tax value of 800 and an applicable rate of 10%. The final 20 is a hypothetical allowance for the remaining charges, not a statutory fee.
- VAT-inclusive list price: 800.
- Cash discount: 40 → actual car purchase price: 760.
- Registration tax under the assumption: 800 × 10% = 80.
- Registration/plates, inspection, road-use charges and compulsory liability insurance: hypothetical allowance of 20.
- Estimated total before optional extras: 760 + 80 + 20 = 860.
If you choose an own-damage insurance and accessory package costing another VND 12 million, the budget becomes VND 872 million. If you have already paid a VND 20 million deposit and the contract credits it in full, VND 852 million remains payable. The deposit is money already paid, not a discount that makes the car cheaper.
You can try your own figures in the Mua Xe Gì .vn on-road calculator. It starts with the list price and has a separate registration-tax valuation field. To estimate a discounted deal, deduct the actual cash reduction once from the calculated total, then add or adjust costs not included in that estimate. For a battery-electric car, choose the correct powertrain rather than copying the petrol-car calculation above.
7. Get a comparable quotation before paying a deposit
You can send each dealer the same request: “Please quote this exact trim, colour and production year, registered in this location. Separate the discounted car price, statutory charges, service fees, gifts and optional extras, and show the total and quotation expiry.” A specific request makes the conversation shorter and reduces omissions.
- Vehicle: trim, paint, production year, vehicle condition and expected delivery date.
- Car payment: VAT-inclusive price, each deduction and whether manufacturer and dealer support have been counted twice.
- Offers: payment, invoice, financing and trade-in conditions, and whether benefits can be combined.
- Drive-away costs: registration locality, tax valuation, road-use/insurance periods and paperwork service fees.
- Extras: the name, price and your agreement for own-damage insurance, accessories and service packages.
- Deposit: who receives it, how it is credited, refund/non-refund terms, and what happens if delivery is delayed or the price changes.
If you finance the purchase, ask for another breakdown: your initial cash contribution, loan amount, repayment schedule and total interest/fees under the loan terms. “Drive away with a deposit of…” describes payment timing, not the on-road price. A low monthly instalment alone does not show the total paid over the loan term.
Frequently asked questions
Is the website price the final dealer price?
Not necessarily. Establish whether it is a list price, an offer price or an on-road estimate, then compare it with a time-limited quotation for the exact car. A useful shortlisting figure does not replace the purchase terms.
Can a gift advertised as worth VND 30 million reduce the bill by that amount?
Only if the programme or dealer agrees to that conversion. Otherwise it is an extra item you receive. In your cash budget, deduct only confirmed reductions or reimbursements, taking the reimbursement timing into account.
Does the on-road price include monthly ownership costs?
It generally does not cover all later fuel/charging, parking, maintenance or loan interest. Even when the quote prepays a period of road-use charges or insurance, keep a separate monthly running budget.
Should I choose the dealer advertising the biggest discount?
I would first compare the total for the same car and the same benefits. Then consider delivery timing, deposit terms, insurance, accessories you actually need and clear paperwork. The aim is a deal you understand and are comfortable with.
From a quotation to your own budget
Once the three prices are separated, choosing a car feels simpler: the list price gives you a starting point, the offer shows what you receive, and the on-road total tells you whether it fits your budget. Keep the itemised quote and allow for running costs, so the excitement of collecting the car comes with a manageable spending plan.
